My last day here, with the short week long holiday coming to a close. After the hot ride yesterday I’d taken a swim at the local pool. This enflamed the rib injury I had sustained on the very first day out riding. As a result I elected to take a slightly less strenuous tour, travelling up the Kinzig valley to a village called Schiltach. All in all a round trip of around 58kms.

The paths wind back and forth across the Kinzig, but stay more or less close to the river. You do notice the difference, riding up a valley that provided industry and trade to the region for a thousand years, compared to riding up the small side valleys containing nothing but farms and the occaisional lumber yard. In the main valley you encounter towns, dikes, autobahn bridges, railway lines and stations. Interesting in their own way but they do tend to disturb your rythym.

The most interesting town was Wolfach, probably one of the most beautiful towns I have seen in the region. The townsfolk are obviously proud of their village as every window of every building is lovingly adorned with flower pots or ornaments. It sits at the junction of the Kinzig and the Wolfach rivers. I spotted a fisherman in the early morning fishing for trout.

Passing through Wolfach I headed up the valley for the final 12km to Schiltach. The bike paths soon ended and I found myself riding along the roads. If you are pressed for time, or don’t want to push things too far, then the stretch from Haslach to Wolfach is the nicest, and remains close to the river the whole way.

I was on a tight schedule again as my train back home was due to leave at 10:40AM. So I turned the tour into a conditioning run, and powered straight back down the valley along the main roads as fast as I could pedal. Even though it was downhill, the slope is so slight that you have to pedal all the way to keep up top speed. I managed the 30km in 45 minutes. Not bad.

I’m heading home to Karlsruhe now, wondering what to do next weekend. My rib had better heal by then, because I would like to tackle the highest peak in the region at 965m.
