I was up bright and early again this morning and set off up the Fischerbach, this time on the other side of the Kinzig. It was a 30km tour, climbing to 637 meters to Nillhöhe, where you have a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys. Since I’m connected via a slow dialup connection at the moment, the pictures will have to wait.

Here’s the map as usual.

The first part of the journey is fairly flat, as I was traveling up the Kinzig valley. At Fischerbach the path turns north and begins its steady unbroken climb. It was fairly uneventful, except for the odd local speeding to work down the, for him, familiar curves of the road. The cows just stared at me with blatant disinterest, since I was clearly neither edible nor interested in eating them. This time I stopped a little more often to take photos that might be of interest, although the light was not so great – it was early morning and overcast.

This time I was able to ride all the way to the top. Perhaps the slope was slightly easier, but I like to think that I am getting more used to pacing myself and changing gears at the right moment. It is surprising what a difference it makes if you miss a gear change and lose momentum.

My hopes of continuing on to Brandenkopf (948m) were dashed, since the paths along the ridge are all dirt – no use for my road bike. Tomorrow I will have a mountain bike to try, so I am really looking forward to that. Hopefully I wont bend myself into a Pretzel.

After returning home and breakfasting I talked the family into driving up the same path. The view was worth it. My kids are now convinced that I am quite mad, not seeing the point in riding a bike upwards when cars are so much better at achieving that feat of gravity defiance.
