On my first day touring, I decided to head up the valley of Welschensteinbach and try and follow one of the bike tours on the map. Only 300 meters from the start my foot slipped from the dew drenched pedal and I crashed into the bank at the side of the path, which threw me back on to the path with a thud. I suffered bruising to the ribs and muscles between them. Unperturbed I straightened out my bike and continued on.

My map is a detailed map of the Kinzig area but I still had a lot to learn a lot about reading it. The path followed the road and the “Bach”, the German word for stream until the village of Welschensteinach. There, I needed to decide whether to continue following the main road, or head up the side valley. Since it was the first day I went for the path less travelled.

I certainly wasn’t prepared for how tough the hills were going to be. Reaching the top was worth it though. I tried following one of the bike paths marked on the map. To begin with it was fine and I enjoyed traveling flat along the ridge and enjoying the view. The asphalt soon turned into stone and gravel, and then to a rough forrest path. No use on my road trekking bike. As a result I quickly turned back down the mountain and, with the brakes on constantly, inched back to a smoother path. From there I enjoyed for the first time the exhilaration of gliding down the mountain at full speed and back to the campingplatz.

Great fun. Next day I needed to plan a little better – for example by bringing a water bottle and by looking for paths that were somewhat better for a road bike.

PS: Here’s a photo of some farmhouses near Kreuzplatz a took a few days later when I passed by again.
