Batterweg 42km Today turned out to be a day for another last minute mountain bike tour. Getting people together on the weekend can be a difficult thing. This weekend I tried to leave my options open and ended up hanging on the phone waiting. I finally reached Rainer, a mountain climber who knows the trails in the northern black forest well. We decided on the Batterweg – a good combination of uphill on forest paths and downhill on single trails.

Wattkopf 20km

Today I was planning to head for the Thermal Spa at Bad Wildbad. A reluctant weather – like those days you wake up in a bad mood and don’t really know why. Cold or wet and sometimes cold and wet. Then a little sunshine. Wolfgang wanted to take no notice of the weather and ride around the Wattkopf. I wasn’t really that keen, but went along anyway.

Sauwetter!

I tried to stand stationary on my bike today – a skill known as a track stand. There were one or two brief moments where you might say that I was on my way to getting it, but for the most part it was a pretty dismal experience. My cleats got in the way constantly, which was very annoying. Normally when I mount my bike I have to flick at the pedal until the cleat side faces up and I can click in. On the day I don’t want to do that, the pedals always turned the cleats face up and clicked me in. Oh, great! Just what I didn’t need. Anyway – I’m not giving up, just going back to the drawing board. Maybe I’ll try next time with normal shoes.

Last weekend I was out and about again with a group from the Deutsche Alpenverein’s Mountainbikers. (You can read the main article in the German section). The destination was the Mahlberg, travelling along the ridges.

Since I last blogged here I have been very busy. First in selecting and purchasing a mountain bike and then in obsessively learning to ride it. This has been loads of fun.

If you give me too much choice, I can end up procrastinating over a decision. Where should I keep a log of my mountain bike tours? Sites such as gps-tour.info offer the advantage of very nice displaying of maps and ascents.  It doesn’t offer the story line feel that a blog does. I would like to keep my tours organised by the date they occurred, not the date I type them into a blog. And finally, I really would like to use ozjeff.com for hosting all things OzJeff.  So there’s lots to do.

PS: I have back dated some of the posts so that the tours appear with the correct date.
